The New Face Of Jewelry

By Illiana Waldbaum

Numerous changes have taken place throughout the jewelry industry. Many forms of jewelry which were once quite ubiquitous and highly praised in society are now nowhere to be found. On the other hand, there are many new and emerging forms of jewelry that are becoming leaders in the industry as far as supply and demand.

Of course, the classics are always around and will most likely be around for a while. After all, the reason that gold and silver have been used as currency for thousands of years across the world is because of their preciousness and scarceness.

Furthermore, practically everyone knows that diamonds are a girl's best friend, and both freshwater and sea pearls are still as precious now as in biblical times, due to the hard labor involved in obtaining them.

What we speak of are the new metals and materials that have only recently become available due to new excavation practices and purifying methods. We speak of materials that, after much research has been done, have been proven to be just as durable, if not more durable, than even diamonds.

For example, tungsten is such a material. When it was discovered in 1783 in Spain, little was known about its capabilities. In fact, because in its raw form, tungsten is a steel-gray metal that is often brittle and hard to work, it was assumed to be quite worthless and a waste of time.

Over time, however, scientists discovered that there were multiple uses for tungsten. For example, they discovered that it served as a fantastic current conductor and was inserted into light fixtures. It was also used as a major part of circuitry and even found in X-Ray machines.

Once the tungsten purification process was properly developed by scientists, the metal could then become a tremendous jewelry hit. Today it is quite common to find wedding bands of tungsten carbide rings. Many prefer to use tungsten rings as wedding bands due to their long lasting durability.

The appealing lustrous form of tungsten jewelry and the attractive features provided for all who wear tungsten rings have made tungsten a world recognized form of jewelry, which makes tungsten even more appealing. - 32532
